Botox

What is?

Botox (botulinum toxin) is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles and to reduce excessive sweating. It is produced from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum.

Effect

Botox is the most widely used cosmetic non-surgical treatment in the prevention and correction of wrinkles. It gives the face a fresh and rested look by reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. The injection blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles. Therefore the muscle can no longer contract as forcefully, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. The treatment is used effectively on the forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines (lines in the nose), chin (for dimpling), skin bands on the neck, and around the mouth for smoker’s lines and down-turned corners of the mouth. Dynamic wrinkles, (wrinkles which appear during muscle contraction), yield more dramatic results than static wrinkles, visible at rest.

Process

Botulinum toxin is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles. The procedure takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. It generally takes 2 weeks to take full effect. The effects last approximately three to four months thereafter from a single treatment of botulinum toxin.
